How to wash TENCEL™ Lyocell (plant-based silk) bed linen — the easy method
TENCEL™ Lyocell is a material known for its fluid drape, comfort, and naturally "clean" feel on the skin.
A few simple adjustments are enough to preserve this feel, wash after wash.
TENCEL™ Lyocell is easy to care for, provided gentle practices are followed to protect its fluidity, breathability, and natural drape.
Important: TENCEL™ is not a "fabric"
At Maison CÉTOILE, we specifically refer to TENCEL™ Lyocell — and that's not a minor detail.
TENCEL™ is a fiber brand developed by Lenzing, and it comes in several variants (Lyocell, Modal, Filament).
Our bed linen is made from TENCEL™ Lyocell, a plant-based fiber that we sometimes call vegetable silk for its naturally silky feel.
Correctly naming the material helps to better understand its behavior... and how to care for it.
The CÉTOILE method (in 1 minute)
1) Gentle wash
-
Ideal wash at 30°C
-
Delicate cycle
-
Mild detergent (no need to overdose)
-
Light spin: softness also comes from this
An overly aggressive cycle is the primary cause of loss of handfeel.
2) Tumble dryer: yes, but gentle
On our labels: tumble drying allowed at low temperature
-
Gentle program
-
Ideally remove linen as soon as the cycle ends
Excessive heat is often responsible for:
-
a less fluid drape
-
slight shrinkage
-
a "drier" feel to the touch
3) Finishing (if needed)
In most cases, light steaming or gentle ironing is sufficient.
TENCEL™ Lyocell naturally regains its shape.
Good practices for bulky bed linen
-
Turn duvet covers and pillowcases inside out before washing → limits visible friction
-
Close zips and buttons → prevents abrasion
-
Do not overload the drum → the fabric needs water and space to remain supple
These simple steps significantly extend the quality of the fabric.
"My TENCEL™ comes out a bit stiffer": is that normal?
Yes.
After washing, TENCEL™ Lyocell may feel slightly "drier" to the touch.
This is a common reaction:
the handfeel becomes fluid again once the fabric is completely dry, put back in place... and with use.
To absolutely avoid (the 3 classic mistakes)
-
High heat (hot wash or too hot drying)
-
Excessive rubbing (too "sporty" cycle or overloaded drum)
-
Aggressive products (bleach, powerful stain removers)
These three points are the main causes of loss of softness.
In summary
-
Gentle wash at 30°C, light spin
-
Tumble dry low temperature
-
Light steam if necessary
